Railway construction

Overview of railway project
http://www.libyaninvestment.com/railways/main_railways.php

Bridge bearings have already been supplied by Silvertown, Britain.

Walterbau, Germany, is to start work soon on the construction of a concrete sleeper factory near Al Khums. The plant will be designed to produce about 500,000 monobloc concrete sleepers a year. A total of 6.8 million is required.

The port of Al Khums is being prepared to receive materials for the construction of the railway. A 30km line will be built to link the port to the sleeper plant. Al Khums will become the main materials distribution centre for the western part of the railway.

REB hopes that track laying can start in 2002. The first 82,000 tonnes of rail will be imported from the Czech Republic. Vossloh, Germany, elastic fastenings have been specified. The railway will be standard gauge. It will be mainly single track. Passenger trains are expected to operate at 120 to 140km/h, and freight trains at 80 to 100km/h. REB wants to open the first section of line in about three years time.
DEConsult, Germany, is reassessing REB's requirements for motive power rolling stock, signalling and telecommunications, and expects to submit its recommendations shortly. However, Elghul said the railway is likely to have CTC, axle counters, automatic train location, and will be equipped with optic fibre cables. REB has just awarded a contract to Rites, India, for a feasibility study to extend the planned southern line to Chad.

One problem which REB faces is building the new railway into existing towns and cities. Not surprisingly there is considerable opposition to building the railway if buildings have to be demolished. In Tripoli, the main station will be built on the outskirts of the city, about 10km from the centre.
